To say that we can handle all your audio needs is just the beginning. With over fifty years of collective experience, our professional staff can most certainly help construct your project from inception to finished product. What keeps clients returning is the comfortable, relaxed and inspiring atmosphere. This is what we have built our business on.

What was, until 2005, an estate dedicated to showing and breeding World Champion Morgan horses, has now become a recording and writing paradise, sitting on 55 acres of wooded hillside land. We encourage our guests to get out and enjoy the grounds that surround our facility. Walk the trails through mature forests, past fish-able lakes and ponds. Studio amenities include wireless internet, bus parking, sleeping quarters with shower and more. Mobile recording services are also available.

Studio B - "Cat Got An Ass Lounge," our live action stage, has featured some of the best local & regional music acts. Studio B, as well as, our 17,000 square foot indoor facility are available for your next private event.

In 2010 Stable Studios hosted the Wuhnurth Music Festival featuring acts such as Cornmeal, Marco Benevento Trio, Papadosio, Family Goove Company, just to name a few. This summer, June 17th-19th, Stable Studios will again be entertaining festival goers. The Stable Studios Music Festival will boast a lineup of Dumpstaphunk, 7 Walkers, HeadTronics, Melvin Seals and Terrapin Flyer, Rubblebucket, The Macpodz, Twin Cats, Sophistaphunk, & many more.

Sure, you think... and for how much? $5 bucks. Yup. Just $5.00

So here's the deal:
We want to help singer, songwriters, bands and all musicians get their talents out there! But we know it isn't easy to get started and we know the music industry can be expensive.
SO we decided that we would open our studio to anyone and everyone that wants a chance to play, be heard and hear themselves!

We will have registration at 7:00p each Thursday through February 2012 (after that call for details)

Stage times will be 15 minutes for each band/person to perform. IF you need a house band, we have that too! We ask that if you need the house band, to please arrive between 7-7:30 to sign up.

All performances will be recorded and available to pick up the following week.

What To Bring

Even the most seasoned festive vet forgets things from time-to-time. Here’s some things we think you might want to remember to help make your weekend even more enjoyable.

Most of these items can be found at our general store if you forget.

SUNBLOCK

Ever been having so much fun, you had no idea until you moved in the middle of the night that you burned the hell out of your back… ya, it sucks.

HEADLAMP OR FLASHLIGHT

Especially if you are planning to camp in the woods. We have lights around the main area, but the further out you venture, the darker it becomes. Don't say you weren't warned.

BABYWIPES

Ah, the best thing after a few days of dancing and sweating with no shower. Plus if you forgot the sun block, it can feel pretty darn good on a sunburn.

FIRST AID KITS

We have a medic onsite for the duration of the event, but who wants to hike all the way there for a mere bee sting or band-aid. Keep a few things at your site just in case.

BLANKETS

Ya it’s June, but you never know if it will be chilly at night. Plus you can bring them into the concert area or use near the lake for a mid-day nap

CHAIRS

How many times have you left without grabbing these?

TARPS

You never know when you will need them. They come in handy for many reasons. You never know when a new friend you just met will need a cover to sleep under. Unless of course you would rather they sleep in your tent

CONDOMS

Speaking of sleeping in tents together… Bring some. You never know what will happen when the music gets you feelin’ all right….

UMBRELLAS/PONCHOS

Although we are doing the NO RAIN DANCE, there is always a chance. Case in point; our ’08 festival had a 30% chance and ended up being the biggest rain storm to hit Indiana in 100 years. Just be prepared.

EARPLUGS

20 years and countless concerts later, you will wish you started wearing them much earlier than you did. Especially if you want to sleep at night.

WATCH OR CLOCK

Nothing sucks more than missing your favorite band because you tried to read time according to the sun only to realize you have no idea how to do that and ended up missing an epic performance.

We will card, so you will want to bring this if you plan to drink. And no fakes we are really good at detecting them.

CAN OPENER

Ready for that delicious can-o-corn at 3 a.m. and don’t have a way to open to delicious treat? What a bummer…. Hope you brought that first aid kit because you know you will inevitably try to open it with a pocket knife of sorts and end up stabbing yourself.

DEODORANT, TOOTHPASTE, & DRY SHAMPOO

Just a thought, I mean you are living here for several days…. You may like that funky smell, but others may not. Please don’t use them in our lake

BUG SPRAY

There are several really good types of “bug sprays” that are all-natural and not harmful to the insects or you. Check with your local health store or whole foods market. Just an FYI: Bugs HATE anise.

WATER, WATER, WATER, WATER, WATER….. did we mention WATER?

You can't go wrong with water and you can’t bring to much. Don’t be afraid to pack a little extra for that random person walking by your tent looking super dehydrated. They will need it too, and since we are all living together like family, we gotta look out for one another.

NO ILLEGAL DRUGS, WEAPONS, FIREWORKS, NITROUS TANKS
Violators are subject to local/state/federal law and will be ejected from the festival grounds with no refund.

NO UNDERAGE DRINKING ALLOWED
We will card, so be prepared to show identification.

NO GLASS
It is a real pain for us. It’s difficult for us to recycle, it breaks and we can’t clean it up. Kids and animals step on it & it just sucks. Please don’t bring it. No one wants to deal with a cut foot while dancing. Not to mention Owen County does not have a glass recycling program. Any glass will go to the landfill and glass does not decompose.

UNAUTHORIZED VENDING IS PROHIBITED
Authorized vendors paid for their spots & supported the venue and artists by doing so. Don’t be “that guy” and vend your goods anyways. Not cool. Not right. If we see catch you doing it, we will ask you once to stop. Catch you again and we reserve the right to ask you to leave the event (and come on, you don’t want to do that!)

ARM BANDS
They must be worn at all times! You will not be allowed to enter the concert area without them. If they fall off or break, please speak to one of our staff members.

PARKING PERMITS
Only cars with our signature parking permit passes will be allowed onto the venue property. All other vehicles will have to park off site with transportation provided to the venue.

RESPECT OUR PROPERTY
Clean up after yourself. Recycle whenever possible. DO NOT throw your cigarette butts on the ground. We will have receptacles placed all around to make it easy to pitch them.

SWIM AT YOUR OWN RISK
The lake and island are sooo tempting especially on a hot June afternoon. Jump in, paddle around, and enjoy yourself! Just be careful and respect others in the lake with you

NO OUTSIDE ALCOHOL ALLOWED IN CONCERT AREA
If you are 21+, you are more than welcome to bring your own alcohol into your campsite. Just don’t bring it to the concert area. We will have our beloved SUNKING brew on tap (support your local brewery) and wine available for a great price right next to the food vendors/stage areas.

CAMPFIRES
Assuming that there are no fire warnings for the weekend, you should be able to have fires at your sites. If we are under any state/county restrictions, please respect that and don’t light any fires. You must put your fire(s) out before you leave your campsite. Be sure your fires are contained properly, if they are not properly contained and/or dangerous, we reserve the right to ask you to put them out. We are also in the process of getting a few communal fires in place for people to gather and relax at night.

BE NICE TO OUR BIRDS
Yes, we have chickens and turkeys and while its tempting to touch our even chase them, please don’t.

DON’T HESITATE TO ASK US FOR HELP
That’s what all the staff is for! If we don’t know of problems, we can’t help you. We are here to make sure everyone has a great time and will do our best to make that happen for everyone. We will also have a certified EMT on site at all times.

RESPECT YOUR NEIGHBORS
Don’t forget that there are families and small children around. Just be aware… Have fun and feel free to express yourself, all we ask is that you be aware.

THE GOLDEN RULE
Treat others as you would like to be treated.

Keep Our Scene Clean

Hey all you wonderful people out there! We hope you had a fantastic Earth Day and to keep up with the Green Initiative, Stable Studios will be doing our best this year to encourage you to go Green while you are here and we will even make it easy for you!! Who doesn’t like to do the right thing AND be rewarded for it!??

Here are a few ways to pitch in at our festival and receive some great prizes for doing so:

Each party that attends our festival will receive a trash bag upon entrance. We are encouraging you to keep your area picked up during and after your weekend here at Stable Studios and we are doing our best to make it easy for you.
We will have on-site trash & recycling containers located all throughout the grounds. These containers were painted by the local elementary schools as part of an Earth Day project.
We will have the following designated containers:
1. Compost material which we will use in our gardens.
2. Aluminum which will go to a local business for profit and donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Owen County.
3. Landfill.
Anytime you bring us a bag of recyclables and put them in the correct dumpster, we will reward you with a prize. Literally all you have to do is pick up after yourself, deposit your trash in the correct containers, and show that you care.
Each time you help clean-up, we will put your name into a drawing for our Big ticket item!! (oh the suspense! Trust us, if you are here for music, you will want this ticket)
We are also strongly encouraging carpooling. Many of you that attended Wuhnurth last year may remember the walk/ride from the parking to the venue. We will have a limited amount of on-site car camping available and day parking off-site.
Tickets for the limited onsite parking/camping are available on-line (www.stablestudios.net) and for only $20!! You can split that cost with as many friends as you can fit on your spot. We will also have woodland camping available for those of you who enjoy getting off the beaten path.
There’s no limit to the number of tents on your spot, but we are limiting the vehicles to one only, so get all your friends to ride together. After all the drive to and from events can be the most fun!
We ask that there is NO GLASS this year!
We will also be asking for donations of several items that you may have left at your campsite when it’s time to go. These items will be used in art projects here and at other events around the Midwest.
Be sure to check out the art installations around the property. 90% of all decorations are made possible by recycled materials.

Above all, we want you to have a great time here. We also want to keep the serene beauty that makes Stable Studios such an oasis. We thank you all in advance for doing your part to Keep our land clean!

Benefit for the March of Dimes ~ April 23rd, 2011

The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. To help the Bell family raise money for the March of Dimes, we will have music, food and a silent auction here at Stable Studios! The event will take place Saturday, April 23rd from 1-6pm.

Delainey's Story
"Our daughter Delainey was born 14 weeks to soon. She weighed 1pound 11 ounces. She spent 3 months in the hospital. She had heart surgery while she was there to close a valve the didn't shut properly. She came home with a heart monitor and oxygen along with 8 diagnosis and about 6 medicines.

Now our baby girl weighs 19 pounds and is 21 months old!! She is walking and talking! She has Graduated First Steps and you would never know she was born 3.5 months early! She is a true Miracle! Our family wants to help support more miracles in Indiana!"

All of our food will be prepared from farm raised chicken and beef, raised right here. We will also use all organic and locally grown vegetables in all the dishes. The food will be $5/plate for adults and $3/plate for children. We will also have drinks available, including beer and wine, reasonably priced. A portion of the food/drinks sold will also benefit Delainey and the March of Dimes. We hope you'll attend and support a wonderful cause and an amazing little girl. If you are unable to attend we are accepting monetary donations or anything else that can be used in our auction!

Vendor Rules & Guidelines

We will operate on a first come, first serve basis. Although vendors do not have exclusive rights to any one product, we will do our best to make sure that there is variety.
Vending fees are non-refundable. This event will happen rain or shine.
A $25.00 fee will be imposed for any returned checks.
No sharing of booth space with other vendors.
Stable Studios will not be held responsible for loss or theft of items.
Stable Studios will not be held liable for damage to person or property.
We take pride in out facility and ask that you do to. Vendors are responsible for trash removal. We will have on-site trash containers available for recycling and landfill use. We strongly encourage the use of both.
No explosives, fireworks, selling of counterfeit items, unlicensed merchandise, guns, alcohol, drugs or offensive materials.
No glass.
We will do our very best to accommodate you in the event that you have forgotten something. Stable Studios will not be able to guarantee vendors tables, chairs, extension cords, etc. If you think you may need it, bring it.
By signing the above contract, you are agreeing to stay for the duration of the festival unless otherwise discussed with Stable Studios.

Upon receiving your application and contract, you will be issued two (2) vendor IS wristbands, these are non transferable. Additional vendor/employee wristbands may be purchased upon arrival; however, we ask that you let us know ahead of time if possible.

Vendors will be allowed to set up their booths Thursday June 16th, 2011. Please make arrangements with Stable Studios prior to arriving. We ask that each vendor make their best effort to establish their spots before NOON on Friday June 17th, 2011

Dumpstaphunk

Formed in 2003, Dumpstaphunk was initially assembled by keyboardist Ivan Neville on a whim to perform a solo slot at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Ivan immediately selected the unique double-bass attack of both Nick Daniels and Tony Hall on bass, handpicked rock solid local legend Raymond Weber to man the skins, and enlisted his own bloodlines for the scorching guitar rhythms of fledgling up n' comer, and younger cousin, Ian Neville, to round out a line-up of some of the Crescent City's finest and funkiest musical cohorts! Dumpstaphunk's informal performance became that of immediate legend. The project has since grown from chance side-project into what is now widely considered to be one of New Orleans' most popular and modern musical exports. With a direct lineage to The Meters and The Neville Brothers, Dumpstaphunk is a recipe for creating a new standard for an entire genre.

“Dumpstaphunk’s groove is a unique monster. It's not the minimalist funk of the Meters and it’s not the relentless funk of James Brown, although it has that rhythmic drive. It's not the psychedelic, over-the-top circus of Parliament-Funkadelic, but it often has that political slant. It's not the party funk of the Ohio Players, but it shares the high vocals that take the pressure off the bottom. Dumpstaphunk is a whole other school of funk. Dumpstaphunk was awarded "New Orleans Best Funk Band" by Offbeat Magazine and Gambit Weekly in 2007 and 2009, and most recently the trophy for Best Funk Award at the 2010 Big Easy Awards. Not uncommon to the festival circuit, Dumpstaphunk has unleashed notable performances at some of the nation's largest music extravaganzas, including Bonnaroo, VoodooFest, 10,000 Lakes, New Orleans Jazzfest, Bear Creek, Wanee, High Sierra, and Gathering of the Vibes.

Dumpstaphunk's musicians have shared the stage with many legendary figures.... Ivan and Ian‚ the sons of Neville Bros. Aaron and Art Neville respectively‚ seem to play their instruments flawlessly... and the dirty funk resonates organically from their souls as the offspring and kin of the legendary New Orleans Neville Bros family! A conservative sample of the impressive list of bands Ivan has either recorded or performed with includes The Rolling Stones‚ Bonnie Raitt‚ The Neville Bros, Gov't Mule‚ John Mayer, and Keith Richards & The X-pensive Winos to name a few. With a resume like that, it comes as no surprise that Trey Anastasio and Dave Matthews have both, in the past, tapped bassist extraordinaire Tony Hall for their own side projects, and drummer Raymond Weber who also played with Trey, originally cut his chops with The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the Wild Magnolia Mardi Gras Indians, and has also sat behind the kit for Harry Connick Jr. and Joe Sample. Nick Daniels, who supplements the bottom as one of 2 bass players in Dumpsta boasts an impressive list of colleagues including Etta James and Boz Scaggs, and Ian has played with the likes of Funky Meters, Lettuce, his new outfit Dr. Klaw with Eric Krasno, and more recently sitting in and adding some flavor to the stoner fusion of Southern Cali jam stalwarts Slightly Stoopid!

It's no wonder these boys can put the Phunk in your Dumpsta, and moving forward in 2011, they continue to push the envelope of the form of a progressive funk sound that has arguably become the most defining in the modern genre of New Orleans music. With their latest release “Everbody Want Sum” starting to permeate with the single “Oughta Know Better” (co-penned by Allman Brothers / Govt. Mule Warren Haynes), featured performances at Offbeat Magazines Best of The Beat 2011, and a coveted mainstage slot at Jazzfest this year, Dumpstaphunk now stands on its own, as the legitimate torchbearer of all things funky both in The Big easy and beyond……… Who Dat!!!!

The Waldemere Revival

Indianapolis-based TWR's ambient, folk rock sound has become a staple in the Indiana music scene. With help from dedicated fans, Indie 500 Records, and Hidden Relic Productions, they've gone from searching for dates to touring the Midwest.

The Waldemere Revival started with just a vision of creating music for friends and family. Their roots can be traced back to the actual name of the band Waldemere Avenue, the street in which Corey Flick and Steve Martin grew up together as brothers on the west side of Indianapolis, IN. The brothers' passion for their craft was based on a single, simple notion; "We're going to make music that actually speaks to the people, music that has real purpose." The band is comprised of five members, Corey Flick (vocals, rhythm guitar, and harmonica), Steve Martin (lead vocal and rhythm guitar), Blain Crawford (Bass,) John Young (lead guitar and vocals), and Justin Atkins (Drums).

Sometime between 2008 & 2010 TWR's sound clicked with the local scene. Fans began flooding bars, venues, festivals, & concert halls hungry for their unique sound. Based out of Indianapolis TWR has played some of the finest venues in Indiana including Emens Auditorium in Muncie, The Bluebird in Bloomington, & The Mousetrap in Indianapolis. They've shared the stage and opened for fine musicians such as Particle, Cornmeal, Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, Marco Benevento, That One Guy, Great American Taxi, The Macpodz, Willy Waldman (Sublime, Tupac, etc.), Zach Deputy, Family Groove Company, Papadosio, Covert Operations, Greensky Bluegrass, and countless other notable bands and musicians.

To classify their music is distinctively impossible. Their sound is ingenious and infused with a magical spells that combine a psychological free-falling emotional compass of ambient-fusion-folk and lyrical-jamrock. Audiences are transcended into an almost hypnotic state of visceral musical seduction and heart-pulsing emotional highs and lows. At any given moment you can find the influence of jambands, southern rock, ambient jazz-fusion, and folk. Their mix of raw talent and creativity is never ending, and each show is proof of that.Passion through cadence. Intensity through intonation and the rhythmically silent verbosity that speaks volumes to those that have spent an intimate evening with these enigmatic musicians will be thrilled by a sound, unclassified.

The Waldermere Revival is doing precisely what it set out to do. Resonating with audiences both young and old that are transfixed by their music. "We make music so that someone could listen and without even a word, those people could be lifted to a higher state of being," says Corey Flick.

After a mind-blowing on-stage jam session, the chemistry between these three musicians was undeniable. A band would be born. "It turned out to be one of those magical musical moments, so we decided to play some full shows together," said Freekbass. Funk and electronica fans everywhere should keep an eye and an ear out for Headtronics, one of the most exciting new projects to hit the scene in years.

While traditionally Headtronics is DJ Logic, Freekbass, and Steve Molitz, the cast of characters is ever revolving. As each band member leads their own band outside of Headtronics, and given the improvisational nature of the group, it is not unusual for the lineup to change from gig to gig. The band has been blessed to have Hall of Fame keyboardist and legendary funk master Bernie Worrell as a special guest on select shows. Other band members and guests have already graced the stage with Headtronics at festivals including Scott Metzger (Rana), Fareed Haque (Garaj Mahal and the Flat Earth Ensemble), Adam Dietch (Soulive, Pretty Lights) and others have joined the mayhem. You never know what type of celebratory sounds might come from this band.

The Macpodz

The Macpodz captivate music lovers with a kinky concoction of American tradition and world grooves. Their sound, called “Disco Bebop,” was conceived in early 2006 when the rhythm section applied a four-on-the-floor roller rink beat to a Charlie Parker standard.

The poet and social activist John Sinclair was integral to the formation of the Macpodz, as Jesse Clayton (keys), Brennan Andes (bass) and Nick Ayers (percussion) accompanied his spoken word performances in Ann Arbor, MI. The addition of Ross Huff (trumpet) and Griffin Bastian (drums) established the quintet.

The Macpodz wooed festival audiences at Rothbury, Bear Creek, Summer Camp, All Good, Moe.Down and Gathering of the Vibes. Building momentum in 2011, plans include the release of new recordings, tour stops in Colorado and California, and sets at several highly anticipated festivals, including the Electric Forest in Rothbury, MI.

The people of the woods were still coming to life when Ali Baba’s Tahini (featuring Umphreys McGee guitarist Jake Cinninger) began to play at noon. It was a strategic scheduling move, hoping the highly anticipated band (who had created quite a buzz prior to Wuhnurth) would be enough motivation to pull the drained festival goers from their tents. Alas, breakfast was still on the fire at my camp and we never made it to the set.

The Woodland stage was shut down after the last of its Saturday night activity and never resumed on Sunday. Accordingly, there were only half as many bands performing during the course of the day. During those sets, most people were busy packing up camp and taking advantage of the shuttle services that were still running regularly.

At 6 p.m. a solid crew showed up to the main stage to get funky with That 1 Guy. The crowd was noticeably lighter than it had been all weekend at the main stage, yet the dance floor was still cozy. The smaller audience also made for an intimate show, allowing everyone to get a close look at the bizarre instrument That 1 Guy has mastered. In addition to the baffling way he manipulates the contraption, his tenacity is easily observed by an enthusiastic range of facial expressions. I was excited when I learned that Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic would be at Wuhnurth, familiar with Ivanovic’s work from a preview I wrote for his show with Eastern Blok at The Melody Inn on August 2nd. Nimmer described the duo as “world class musicians” and offered their names when I asked his opinion for the must-see/can’t-miss shows at Wuhnurth. It was unfortunate that unsurpassed talent such as this group be scheduled so late on the last day of the festival when most people were already home and freshly bathed. Kapsalis and Ivanovic’s guitar performance was a true privilege to see- classically trained to play with lightning fast precision. Their set was a short 45 minutes, but more than enough time to exemplify their proficiencies in the art of guitar playing.

When I toured Stable Studios a month prior to Wuhnurth, my mind instantly envisioned the grounds populated with barking dogs and wandering people; I knew it would feel like more of a home than The Waterbowl ever could. Every physical thing that was a part of the festival felt personal and thoughtful- from life-size band schedules to bold and colorful art installations to signs conveying important information. Although it was, plain and simple, a pain in the ass to transport camping gear into the woods, I believe the tradeoff of camping in close proximity to the stages (and in the woods!) is more than worth the hassle. Security and staff were friendly and helpful, giving Wuhnurthers the freedoms they’ve come to accustomed to in festival life. Mother Nature was cooperative, giving warm and tolerable temperatures all weekend, complete with sun and a total lack of rain. And, of course, the music was superb.

Congratulations to James Nimmer and his staff, Stable Studios, all the bands, and every single person who attended the festival. Without each of these essential variables present in the equation, Wuhnurth could not be the magnificent destination that it has evolved into over the last three years. See you all again in 2011!

Once the sun rose on Saturday morning, the grounds of Stable Studios were bustling with curiosity. People began to wander and investigate, taking in the scenery and learning the lay of the land. Morning yoga offered guided meditation and relaxation, while others preferred the token “wake and bake” method to start their day. Campers roamed the woods and introduced themselves to their neighbors. Wuhnurth still stands out from the over-saturated music festival circuit as one of the few remaining events that accommodate pet owners. Accordingly, well-behaved dogs roamed freely and carried the same carefree vibes that have always flown at The Waterbowl, Wuhnurth's previous venue in 2008 and 2009.

I got a late start on the music Saturday afternoon, but made sure not to miss Waldemere Revival on the Pasture Stage. Newly acquired bassist Blain Crawford was absent, leaving a treat for the band’s veteran fans: a special sit-in performance by previous Waldemere bass player Jeremy Baker.

Acting on James Nimmer’s personal recommendations, I made sure to catch California-based Dead Winter Carpenters as evening set in. I barely saw the Wuhnurth founder/organizer all weekend but- as promised- he was present for this particular show, camouflaged in a navy blue ball cap dancing along the far left side of the crowd. I grew restless rather quickly and headed back to camp, making a stop at The Woodland stage to check out Wisconsin progressive jam and funk band Steez along the way.

Saturday night’s prime timeslot was given to the Marco Benevento Trio. The show was the highlight of my entire weekend, ranking just above Friday night’s Papadosio set. I got a taste of Benevento’s experimental, unconventional jazz stylings when Garage A Trois played at West Virginia’s All Good Music Festival in July. This time, with his trio in Indiana, Benevento offered Wuhnurth a unique sound unlike anything the festival has ever heard. Although abstract jams were part of the show, elements of jazz prevailed. An eccentric stage presence paired with expeditious tempos kept weary bodies and minds alert from start to finish.

Lafayette-based live electronic band Sixdollarsuit kept the music flowing on the Pasture Stage while Wuhnurthers waited for The Twin Cats to get started. The relatively new band has made quite a name for themselves in the last year, sharing the stage with well-known acts such as Future Rock, Two Fresh, Papadosio, EP3, and Groovatron. Although the Sixdollarsuit’s sound is still developing and their stage personas are still green, they continue to show great potential and are winning over fans with each performance.

I missed MC Sparkplug at yet another festival; they’ve been on my to-do list since Springfest. Alas, their set fell right in the middle of The Twin Cats’ performance- a show that simply couldn’t be missed. Any follower of my writing knows I perceive them to be the pride of Indianapolis music. I’ve seen The Twin Cats too many times to remember and their live act is always the best on their home turf at The Mousetrap. That’s why seeing The Cats play to such a vast audience of people who are alien to their face-melting funk is always a satisfying experience. As expected, they killed it. And left damn-near every face from the audience in a puddle on the gravel floor of that gigantic barn.

The Werks played behind bizarre masks and handed matching masks to their audience; hundreds of the identical, freaky accessories meandered about the festival grounds for the remainder of the weekend. UV Hippo and EP3 finished up the night and the music finally ended at 4 in the morning. Once again, my energy reserves were spent before Saturday night festivities came to a close. When I woke up on Sunday I was still wearing the previous night’s clothes, my eyes were nearly sealed shut from sleeping in contacts, and I was lying in a haphazard pile of glow sticks- all signs of a good, hardy night of raging.

GETTING THERE
Let’s get it out of the way right now: nobody likes to carry multiple loads of camping gear any further than they can throw it. Unfortunately, secluded camping inside of wooded hills comes at a cost. And that cost is the energy and strength expended in that exact conveyance of materials.

Seemingly aware of this, Wuhnurth staff did a spectacular job at providing a timely and organized shuttle service for the duration of the weekend. The staging area at the front of the parking lot (approximately one mile from the actual festival grounds) was clearly evident and safely watched over by security. The wait was never long. Wristbands were checked before each shuttle left the loading zone. Wheelbarrow and wagon pushers were accommodated by lowering the gate and ramping equipment onto the trailer. People were friendly and there was no hostile activity in sharing space. The drivers were friendly and made special stops for those already attempting to trek on foot so they could join the ride. And while it seemed to be a colossal inconvenience at the time, I can’t help but remember how peaceful and beautiful the actual ride down the simple country road was.

SETTING UP CAMP
I listened in jealousy as I trudged past the main stage on my way into the woods in search of a campsite. Ladymoon was my official welcome to Wuhnurth 2010 but I didn’t have time to stop; we needed to set up before the sun went down. A well-decorated dirt path led through the woods and dumped into a clearing. Here, The Woodland Stage, porta johns, and a small village of vendors awaited. Multiple trailheads branched off of the opening and intertwined across the bohemian settlement coming to life in the trees.

As with previous Wuhnurths, campers had the freedom to choose their home location for the weekend. It seemed that all paths ultimately led down a hill, making it difficult to find a flat spot for tents. As we set up on the smallest slant we could find, my friend reminded our group, “It’s camping. Not The Holiday Inn.” We all nodded in agreement and went to work.

THE MUSIC BEGINS
I was able to catch last of Midwest Hype, arriving just in time to see the entire band dressed in black from head to toe, completely covered in glow stick rings. Like some kind of psychedelic alter-ego, Midwest Hype (known for their wildly entertaining sense of humor) have referred to themselves as GLOB ever since.

Three days after Wuhnurth, Saxophonist Ben Morrissey’s facebook status read, “We represent the Church of the Holy Glowstick Armor. I'd like to take a moment of your time to talk about GLOB!” to which one fan responded, “I've been a devout member since Friday and my life has been very glow-tastic ever since! Thank you GLOB. Thank You.”

Papadosio could be given the unofficial title of “Music Festival Champion Band of 2010”, boasting an impressive list of appearances this summer including Springfest, All Good, Camp Bisco, Forecastle, Floyd Fest, Camp Barefoot, and The Werk Out Festival. Papadosio even produced their own weekend event, Rootwire, featuring music and art from a grassroots perspective.

Their Friday night performance at Wuhnurth was perhaps their best yet- offering a tickling of the senses from all directions. Live painting, fire spinning, and a bizarre character costumed to look like Father Time all played around on stage as the band performed. While Indianapolis was buzzing about art and music at the weekend’s Oranje Festival, Papadosio delivered their own mini-Oranje to fans in Spencer who couldn’t be two places at once.

In more ways than one, it was a noteworthy performance; the band also announced it was their last show ever as a four-piece. The addition of keyboardist Billy Brouse’s younger brother Sam (who will handle sample work) will allow Thogmartin to focus more intently on his guitar.

A quick trip back to The Woodland Stage put me before The Malah, an electronic jam band from Greenville, SC. Although I could have danced away their entire set and wanted to stay for more, my accomplices were on electronica overload from the Papadosio set and were ready for some funk. Lucky for them, Family Groove Company was holding down The Main Stage. We caught most of their set and again trekked through the dusty path to The Woodland stage, admiring the colorful lights that flashed against tree branches to create a wonderfully mysterious series of shadows.

After a brief stop to see Kaleidoscope Jukebox, we made one last trip to The Main Stage in anticipation of Digital Tape Machine’s debut performance. Unfortunately, sound check lasted an eternity (way beyond their scheduled start time) and I was pulled from the audience by my friends when I started to nod off while still standing. Curse my weariness; I hear I missed one helluva set.

Winding down the Summer at Wuhnurth

With only a few days of tolerable weather left in the Midwest, the last outdoor festivals of the season are coming and going fast. This past weekend, Wuhnurth did its best to keep the heat alive. After a couple of hectic years at Muncie’s Water Bowl, Wuhnurth packed it bags and headed down to south-central Indiana’s Stable Studios. Built on 55 acres of picturesque rolling hillsides, Stable Studios was until 5 years ago the home of champion horses, but now houses a couple of state-of-the-art recording studios, an enormous main stage barn, and a beautiful lake in which to dip your toes while you’re baking in the mid-day sun. For a festival whose mission statement is dedicated to preserving the environment, the organizers certainly picked a perfect location to show off nature’s glorious greenery.

The headlining slot on Friday belonged to Ohio-based jamtronica outfit Papadosio. Bassist Rob McConnell certainly made a case for himself as MVP of the fest. A thrilling new song, followed by hard-nosed versions of “All I Knew” and “Night Colors,” from their 2009 disc Observations established McConnell as a force to be reckoned with. While a great deal of Dosio’s songs feature brilliant melodic work from guitarist/vocalist Anthony Thogmartin and keyboardist Billy Brouse, the battery of McConnell and drummer Mike Healy really propel the band that’s now found itself at the forefront of festival acts. I can’t wait to see what happens when Papadosio introduces their fifth member, Sam “Nala” Brouse, sick DJ and keyboardist extraordinaire.

Embryonic Fluid was certainly the breakout act of Wuhnurth. Comprised of DJ Embryo (Dave Embry) and keys maestro Ashton Kleemann, the Fluid duo was all over the place, scattering dancers across the field at the second stage. I hadn’t heard Tool like that, and I certainly hadn’t heard “Reflection” all d’n’b’d out ever. Slamming to the other side of the spectrum, Embryonic Fluid took a Cornmeal tune, “Hasten Jason,” added fiddle player Stephan Cook from Fresh Hops, and tripped that ditty to the max. Finally, the chants of “dubstep, DUBSTEP” hit their target, and DJ Embryo dropped into the dubbiest version of The Who’s “Who are You” that there has ever been. Ridiculous. Look for these guys to bust out of the Midwest with a vengeance.

I’m an Indiana boy, through and through, so I’ve seen Umphrey’s McGee—a lot. I know how absolutely filthy their drummer, Kris Myers, can be. Finally, he’s joined a project that lets him step out as the rhythmic monster he is. Digital Tape Machine is the brainchild of Land of Atlantis guitarist Dan Rucinski, who essentially wanted to create deeply poignant video game music, and used the skills of some of the most talented musicians in Chicago. DTM’s lineup at Wuhnurth consisted of Myers and Rucinski, along with Strange Arrangement’s keyboardist and bassist Joe Hettinga and Kevin Barry, guitarist Marcus Rezak of the Hue, and DJ Boy Elroy. Myers and DJ Elroy started off the late-night set with a couple of nice and easy drum ‘n’ bass tunes. Then something exploded. All the members of the crew eventually made it out, and the breakbeats turned into symphonies. These lush melodies rode on top of the most strident, intense beats I’ve ever heard. The absolutely perfect fusion of breaks and prog. Truly a masterful effort that’s got me looking forward to the debut of DTM’s “The Elephant in the Room.” While all members are parts of incredibly prolific bands who tour relentlessly, I can’t help but hope that Digital Tape Machine starts touring regularly.

Wuhnurth’s second day had less electronic music on the bill. Although, I noticed that several bands I’ve been seeing for years are really incorporating the new sound. I remember when the Indianapolis-based Twin Cats were just a funk band. Suddenly, keyboardist Phil Geyer seems to have a whole host of synths, and the band has this driving sound. Bassist Cameron Reel is a beast, as always, creating a wall of sound with his mastery. The Twin Cats have broken their chains, and are really ripping out some terrific dance music. Catch ‘em if you can!

Sixdollarsuit out of Lafayette, Indiana has a lot to prove. They were the hometown heroes, bringing a huge crowd to their second stage slot. Lots of STS9 comparisons were drawn, but they’re a bit funkier and lighter than that. Nick Golder is a true front man on bass, leading the sonic assault with a raw tenacity. The goal of the band is to get the audience to lose it, and dance, and they’ve accomplished that. When the band truly hits their creative stride, there’s no telling where they’ll go.

A rough night of partying caused me to miss EP3’s set—though I heard they tore it up. Beyond that, never to be satisfied, several fans of electronic music (and buddies of mine) set up guerrilla speaker systems in the woods to blast their own beats. Wuhnurth’s organizer, James Nimmer, wanted to set up a festival that put environmental concerns in the spotlight, and encouraged attendees to commune with nature. There’s nothing more natural than a deep woods rave! The backwoods throwdown really had nothing on the main stage light and sound production. Easily the best festival sound this season. Congratulations to Wuhnurth, I hope you’ve found a permanent home.

Stable Studios: New Home of Wuhnurth

In its relatively short-lived life, the Wuhnurth Music Festival has hosted thousands of people and fostered the creation of countless memories. Wuhnurth’s inaugural show in 2008 attracted nearly 1,000 festival goers and boasted an impressive first-year lineup that included west coast big timers Tea Leaf Green. In 2009, attendance numbers grew to 3,000 and headliners included Pnuma Trio, The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Future Rock, and Kyle Hollingsworth. 2010 guarantees another noticeable jump in crowd numbers and a fresh batch of distinguished artists- notably That 1 Guy, Papadosio, and Cornmeal. In addition to an ever-increasing fan base and always-phenomenal band lineup, Wuhnurth continues to top itself with a vast assortment of local, high-quality food and merchandise vendors, as well as nighttime entertainment featuring fire dances, poi spinners, and hoop twirlers.

But this year, one thing will be different. In a big way.

Due in part to misunderstandings between The Waterbowl (home of Wuhnurth since 2008) and Springfest (Wuhnurth’s smaller sister festival produced by Nick Armogida) earlier this year in April, Springfest was forced to shut down an entire day early; campers were shooed away before Sunday festivities had begun.

Rather than jeopardize the positive reputation Wuhnurth has garnered for itself, Nimmer decided to relocate the festival 2.5 hours south and east of Muncie (1.5 hours from Indianapolis) to Stable Studios in Spencer, IN- an announcement that came less than two months after the Springfest fiasco.

Nonetheless, Nimmer says that he and the venue parted ways on good terms. “The owners of The Water Bowl are still really fine with Wuhnurth happening there. After everything that went down, it was in the best interest of everyone to just kind of take some time off and find a new venue for Wuhnurth. I can’t say that we’ll ever… we might go back to The Waterbowl one day. You never really know what’s going to happen in the future. But, for now, I like Stable Studios.“

Curious to see the lay of the land for the new home of Wuhnurth, I made arrangements for a personal tour of Stable Studios with Jess Wesley, head of promotions, event coordinator, and office manager. Courtney Hughes (of C-Style Photography) joined us as well.

REAL STABLE. REAL STUDIO.
As the name suggests, Stable Studios was, until 2005, an estate dedicated to showing and breeding World Champion Morgan horses. The building has since been transformed into a state of the art recording studio, live music lounge, and one of southern Indiana’s premier locations for outdoor events.

MUSIC ON THE MAIN STAGE
Rather than filling in the vast emptiness of The Waterbowl, this year Wuhnurth will be built around existing structures and landmarks full of history and character. The studio building still dons the iron bars that covered the windows of each individual stable stall. The main concert stage served as a horse-showing arena in a past life; walls have been removed for efficient air flow and mulch has been replaced with fine gravel. The structure remains roofed, ensuring the festival will go on rain or shine.

AMENITIES TO PLEASE
A near-by building that currently serves as the property’s chicken coop will be converted into a general store. An open grassy knoll adjacent to a small garden will be populated by food & craft vendors. A large, murky pond serves as the epicenter of the Stable Studios estate, ruled by a towering weeping willow tree and beautified by a small island in its middle. The pond will be open for swimming (complete with a lifeguard) although I question whether the dark water will be enticing to many or not.

WOODED CAMPING
Due to forested camping, attendees will not be permitted to camp with their vehicles as they have been able to at previous Wuhnurths. The scenario will be similar to the Summer Camp Music Festival, except the hike will be much shorter and the woods will be more primitive. Bring something to transport gear (a wagon, a wheeled garbage can, etc) and also be prepared to clear your campsite (removal of brush and sticks) before erecting your tent.

LAY OF THE LAND
After parking, festival goers will enter the grounds at the northwestern-most corner of the property adjacent to the back of the main stage. A foot path running along the northern edge will lead the masses past the pond and through the trees, dumping into a large clearing in the middle of the woods. Here, the Woodland Stage will be constructed in front of five different trailheads entering the forest, all of which meet up and intertwine together. By nightfall on Friday, this area will have blossomed into a maze of tents echoing with laughter and music, blanketed by the mind-altering mystique of the woods.

WUHNURTH'S ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
Although Stable Studios are prepared to accommodate the large crowd that will be in attendance, it is important to understand that Wuhnurth is being hosted on personal and private property. Be mindful of restricted areas and leave no trace in those which are accessible. As the festival’s mission proclaims, this is a gathering of positive-minded people who are stepping up to support the Midwest music scene and enhance the beauty of their communities. Do your part to make this statement a living truth.
